Spanish originated in the northern part of Spain. It then spread to the Kingdom of Castile. Spanish is also known as Castilian. The language spread to the Americas, Africa and Asia Pacific region along with the expansion of the Spanish Empire. This was during the period between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. Spanish is now one of the official languages of the United Nations, the Organization of American States, the European Union, the African Union, the Organization of Ibero-American States, the Latin Union, the Union of South American Union, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Caricom. It is also the official language or one of the official languages of the countries of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua, Peru, Paraguay, Venezuela and Uruguay besides the U.S, Puerto Rico, Equatorial Guinea and Spain.

There are many reasons why Spanish is becoming more popular. Economic activities that are linked to Spanish speaking countries are major reasons. This includes trade and tourism. Increase in the popularity of Spanish is visible in Portugal, Brazil, Italy, France and the United States.

There are many people around the world that want to learn spanish, especially in the America. Majority of schools now require students to learn a second language, and spanish is the most popular decision. Rocket Spanish and Rosetta Stone are the two main softwares on the market that I am going to compare.

You may have noticed Rosetta Stone being sold in many stores, however, you probably have never heard of Rocket Spanish. Rocket Spanish can be bought online with either a $100 instant download option or a 25 disc $350 package.

The instant download version of Rocket Spanish is a much better buy than the hard copy version because you get the same content. You will only notice one distinction between the hard copy version and the instant download version. With the hard copy, you are able to play the discs in your CD player or in your stereo, and the sound quality is enhanced.

Rosetta Stone is definitely the most popular learn spanish software on the market today. However, it costs at the minimum $259, and that is a decent amount of money. An additional dilemma with the Rosetta Stone software is that it takes a very long time to actually teach the language. If you want to learn spanish quickly, Rocket Spanish is a very good choice.

It is not a good idea to buy Rosetta Stone if you are planning on being a fluent spanish speaker. The software does not offer enough teaching about vocabulary and grammar, and it is very difficult to learn spanish without them. Rocket Spanish teaches you everything about spanish, but Rosetta Stone only teaches some vocabulary.

With Rocket Spanish, it will take you less than three months to learn spanish. If you want to be fluent in spanish, then it will happen. The Rocket Spanish software has been given praise for its fun way of learning. To sum up, Rocket Spanish is a great software if you want to spend around a hundred dollars to learn spanish.

When Learning Spanish, Start With Simple Greetings

Posted by zoe | Learn To Speak Spanish |

Learning to speak Spanish can be both fun and exciting.

Learning Spanish normally starts with Spanish greeting words or phrases.

Beginning with simple greeting words and phrases is not complicated by complex syntax.  As in the English greeting, “Hello”, you can also simply say a single word in Spanish, “Hola” (the “H” is silent and not pronounced).

When first meeting either a stranger or an acquaintance, “Hola” is an appropriate greeting. (When answering the telephone, however, Spanish speakers will frequently say “diga” or “bueno” instead of “Hola.”)

After first greeting someone, you will eventually depart and the Spanish equivalent of “goodbye” is “adios.”

Unlike English which has only one form, Spanish and other Romance languages (Italian, French,Portuguese, and Romanian French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian) have two forms of verbs used when addressing or referring to people.  These two forms are generally known as informal and formal forms. The informal form is normally used for addressing relatives, friends, younger persons, or persons of lower position.  The formal form is normally used for strangers, older people who are not close friends or relatives and for people of higher status or position.

Following the initial greeting, one usually says something such as “How are you?”  A Spanish speaker would say, “Como esta?” (formal) or “Como estas?” (informal), or perhaps “Que passa?” (What’s happening?”), “Como se va?” (formal) or “Como te vas?” (informal) for “How is it going with you?”.

“Good morning” is “Buenos dias” in Spanish while “Good afternoon” is Buenas tardes” and “Good night” is Buenos noches.”

When meeting someone new you might ask their name by saying “Como te llamas?” (informal) or the more formal form, “Como se llama?” which literally translates as “How do you call yourself?”

These greeting words and phrases provide the very basics of Spanish greetings.  As you continue to learn Spanish, you will learn harder and more complex phrases, but these will go along way in starting your ability to speak Spanish.

Frequent use of these commonly used Spanish phrases and words will help build your comfort zone as you continue to learn the language.

8 Good Reasons To Use An Online Spanish Language Course

Posted by zoe | Learn To Speak Spanish |

A great way for learning to speak, read, write, and understand Spanish is to use an online Spanish Language course. Because an online Spanish language course is so versatile, and interactive, it is highly effective for today’s learning style.

My own Spanish journey began when I had to learn, mostly by trial and error! This was due to the fact that I lived in Spain with non-English speaking people and had almost no instructional material to use. All I really had was a first-grade primer to go by.

If you are unable to immerse yourself in the language and culture by actually living in a Spanish speaking country, you need to find another way to learn. There are courses offered at community colleges, high schools, and private schools, plus you can always listen to tapes and CD’s. I have personally used all these methods since returning to the US, but found them greatly lacking.

The classroom setting was very distracting, as well as quite boring. One of my classes was a little exciting though: we had a Cuban exiled criminal who was quite interested in the pretty American teacher. We all watched out for her, especially after class. Castro had tricked President Carter into granting them asylum.

The tapes and CD’s were also rather monotonous and quite out of date. I really was not interested in how to buy a brown umbrella, or hail a taxi. If the dialog with the native speakers was longer, it would be more beneficial, but they usually only speak in snippets of irrelevant conversation.

One time I loaned a Spanish language cassette tape course to a female friend, who told me she didn’t like it at all. Apparently, most of the dialog was about a man picking up a woman at a bar! That’s odd, I never even noticed.

I also have a program that dwells a lot on how a businessman can rent an apartment in a large South American city. This was OK, but I’m not a big businessman, and I don’t like big cities. Naturally, much of the discourse just didn’t relate to me.

One of the best things about an online Spanish language course is that fact that it is relevant and up to date. Because it is interactive and updated, you get fresh information and terminology. This means that you learn how to surf the internet and use a cell phone, rather than leave a big tip (which is against the law in some countries), or hail the infamous taxi.

An interactive course will use things like games, riddles, stories, jokes and slang to keep it lively and entertaining. This is much more useful than elephants, and desks! Most people in the real world don’t actually speak like a book anyway.

You will find that you are much better enabled to actually carry on a conversation by learning in this manner. A good example is learning to talk about futbol, now that will get you some connections!

With an online Spanish language course you will be kept up to date with current usage and proper grammar. You will find that this keeps the learning fresh and interesting.

It is a known fact that learning on a computer is much different than a conventional style of learning. People have much shorter attention spans online and tend to browse and skim much more, looking for the main points. This type of course meets that need very well.

There are many excellent reasons to use an online Spanish language course, these are a few of the highlights. Unless you are fortunate enough to immerse yourself in the language and culture of a Spanish speaking country, the interactive method is the best way to learn
